Ice hockey is an aggressive game. There are five men zooming along on skates on a somewhat small rink. So it is important to referees that they keep the rough play down to a minimum. One way they do this is by calling penalties. Here's how to get called for a stabbing, or spearing, penalty.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Lift your hockey stick so that the blade, or curved part of the hockey stick, is off the ice. You can only get called for a stabbing (or spearing) penalty if your stick is raised in this way.

  2. Step 2

Push your raised blade into another player's body. If a referee sees you do this, you will get a stabbing penalty.

  3. Step 3

Take at least 4 minutes in the penalty box. A stabbing penalty is considered a major penalty in American ice hockey. It is considered so dangerous that a referee may choose to throw you out of the game.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can avoid a stabbing penalty by keeping the blade of your hockey stick on the ice at all times. By doing this you will avoid bad calls and accidental stabbing penalties caused by another player running into your raised stick.
  • Don't assume that just because your stick is on the ice that you will avoid all other penalties. If you use your stick to hit or block your opponent instead of going after the puck, you might still get called for hooking, tripping or interfering.
