In ice hockey, one of the player's most important pieces of equipment is their stick. If a hockey stick breaks during a game it must be replaced. The only player allowed to play with a broken stick is the goal tender. Replacing a broken stick during the action of the game is vital to the game's outcome.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get the attention of the coach. Skate toward the bench. If a stick breaks during a game the stick must be discarded immediately and a new stick must be used.

  2. Step 2

Grab a replacement stick from the coach if there is one in the bench area. Remember to take the broken stick to the bench with you.

  3. Step 3

Call for a substitute if there are no sticks available in the bench area. If there are no replacement sticks in the bench area, another player must enter the game in your place until a replacement stick is found.

  4. Step 4

Find a replacement stick before returning to the ice. Wait for the coach to call the substitute back before you return to the ice. Remember that your skates must not touch the ice before the other player's skates leave the ice.

Tips & Warnings
  • A minor penalty is called against you if you do not discard the broken stick immediately.
  • Goal tenders are the only players who may play with another type of stick. No player but the goal tender may play with the goal tender's stick.
  • Always have one extra hockey stick available during the game in case you need to replace a broken one.

on 7/7/2008 I second what DavidG said. Also, it is actually a penalty if you take the broken stick to the bench with you.

on 12/29/2007 The Best way to get the right stick is to put your jersey number on the stick on the high end of the shaft. When in doubt use your feet to kick the puck away from trouble or to a teammate. Don't Panic and go for a change or new stick when the pressure is off your defense.

on 12/29/2007 Actually you do not need to leave the play and immediately go get a new stick. If you are in the Defensive zone you will want to stay in a position to help your team, by this I mean using your body and yes even your hands to force the puck out of the zone. If you leave the Defensive area and go back to the bench to get a replacement or make a player change you will leave your team short handed and a scoring oppourtunity for the other team could result. So the Rule is drop your broken stick and stay defensive. If you are a forward and your defensman or goalie breaks their stick or looses their stick - Give them Your stick. Goalies and Defensemen are priorities!!!!!!! Make sure to know in advance where your extra sticks are on the bench - the equipment person or player on the bench should be able to turn around and grab your extra stick and as you skate by the bench at full speed.
