The first Memorial Day was celebrated on May 5, 1866 in Waterloo, New York. Before that date, Declaration Day was celebrated to remember fallen Civil War soldiers. Memorial Day is now celebrated to remember all fallen soldiers on the last Monday in May. Many people have forgotten the true meaning of the holiday and need a little help to remember. This can be done with a craft.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Search Enchanted Learning's website for Memorial Day crafts. There are crafts that are free to the public and there are additional crafts for members. If you want to become a member, subscribe via Pay Pal. The cost is $20 per year.

  2. Step 2

Check out craft books from the library. Choose books that honor the United States and books that honor soldiers. Check out Star-Spangled Crafts by Kathy Ross and Kids Celebrate!: Activities for Special Days Throughout the Year by Maria Bonfanti Esche and Clare Bonfanti Braham. Ask your children's section librarian for help.

  3. Step 3

Go to craft days at local craft stores. Michaels Stores has kids craft days on most Saturdays. Visit one of their stores and ask for a list of classes. Go online to your local craft store and find the calendar of events. If the store does not have a class ask them to start one.

  4. Step 4

Ask your child's teacher or a local school's teachers if they would teach crafts for Memorial Day.

  5. Step 5

Call the Girl Scout Council near you. Girl Scout Councils have lots of craftspeople and even props you can check out if you are a member. Ask what the Council in your area has planned for Memorial Day and join in.
