Horses require exercise to keep them in peak performing condition. Exercise time can be precious, and a horse hot walker can be an aid that will save significant time. You can exercise several horses at the same time. Hot walkers can also be a health aid in the rehabilitation of injured horses that can't be ridden, but still need exercise. Here's how to purchase.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Decide on the maximum number of horses that you may need to exercise and buy a walker that will handle that number. Hot walkers are only designed to work an even number of horses, however, for example, two, four, six or eight.
Step2
Choose a bare-bones model that just includes the basics--motor, gear box, upright shaft, and arms, or get an enclosed model with or without a roof or partial roof. Ultra-deluxe models come fully enclosed with a stall and office area on the inside of the walking circle.
Step3
Do an Internet search for "horse hot walker" and visit some of the websites to get ideas and sources for your hot walker, or use the resources listed below.
Step4
Order your hot walker on line or visit your local farm and ranch store where you will probably have to place a special-order.
Step5
Be prepared with a contractor ready to take delivery of the horse hot walker. They are heavy and cumbersome to unload and set up, so it's best to have help. If you choose a deluxe model, the manufacturer will sometimes furnish a crew to bring the hot walker to your site and assemble it there.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some hot walkers require more maintenance than others. Take into consideration how much time and ability you have to do maintenance and select accordingly.
  • Purchase a used horse hot walker to save some money, but only if you are able to do or hire repairs done. Used units rarely come with a warranty.
  • Have an electrical box with a dedicated 20 amp breaker installed within 200 feet of where your horse hot walker will be installed. Use a licensed electrician for all electrical work.
