Spray sprinklers work differently from other type of sprinklers. Selecting a stray sprinkler that best fits your yard requires forethought and understanding. Once you discover the requirements necessary to make the correct decision, pick the spray sprinkler based on these steps.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Research the different types of spray sprinklers. You can go to Home Depot or your favorite neighborhood hardware store.

  2. Step 2

Decide on which two types of spray heads, pop-up or shrub you should use for your yard.

  3. Step 3

Select your spray sprinkler based on your research and the type of landscaping you have or plan to have.

  4. Step 4

Choose a brand of sprinkler you know will water the yard for you in the many years to come. To figure out the best brand to buy try asking a friend, family member or professional.

Tips & Warnings
  • Pop-ups basically pop up as the sprinkler nozzle is connected to a riser. The riser lifts the nozzle up when the sprinkler is set to spray outward. The body of the sprinkler is installed below ground level, thus the sprinkler pretty much is invisible when turned off. Pop-ups' advantages are two-fold - the sprinkler is unseen, so the landscape looks even, and the sprinkler being in the ground is unlikely to trip someone and get damaged by yard equipment.
  • Shrub type sprinklers are installed above ground level, which allows plants to be watered above their level. You've see them in landscapes that have tall, dense shrubs. For safety reasons, avoid shrub type sprinklers next to driveways, pathways, sidewalks, edges or areas where people walk or play. Obviously, people can trip or impale themselves on the sprinkler.
