Students are generally required to take a driver's education class if they want to get a learner's permit. This includes classroom time and time behind the wheel. Driving lessons give all drivers more knowledge and skill on the road. In some states, you get a discount on your insurance if you take lessons.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find out if your school or college offers driving lessons. Many high schools hold Saturday morning classes for teenagers of driving age. Call the main office and inquire.

  2. Step 2

Look in the phone book or online for driving schools in your area. Search under "Driving school." Many cities have several to choose from.

  3. Step 3

Call the driving schools and inquire about their costs and class schedule. Find out if they offer individual lessons, too.

  4. Step 4

Find a driving class that fits into your schedule. There are classes offered on nights and weekends.

  5. Step 5

Arrange for private lessons with a driving instructor. This is a good idea if you're an older driver or don't want to be in a class with others. Plus, you get to schedule a class that truly fits into your schedule.

  6. Step 6

Pay attention to everything your instructor tells you. He will advise you on how to park, merge into traffic, signal, check your mirrors and more.

Tips & Warnings
  • Ask about package deals or discounts.
  • Check in with your community college. They may offer a less-expensive course.
