How to Treat Insomnia With Acupuncture

Insomnia can be classified as the following four types: shallow sleep, difficulty in falling asleep, difficulty in returning to sleep and not sleeping at all. There are five treatments of insomnia with acupuncture based upon the type of insomnia and other symptoms. The following steps will show how to treat insomnia with acupuncture.

  1. Step 1

    Recognize insomnia caused by "liver stagnation leading to fire." The symptoms include difficulty getting to sleep, constipation, headaches, irritability and a red face. Treat this type of insomnia with acupoints GB 20, GB 43, HT 7 and LR 2.

  2. Step 2

    Identify insomnia caused by "phlegm heat attacking the heart." This type of insomnia is caused by a poor diet, fullness in the abdomen or chest, coughing with yellow sticky phlegm, dizziness and blurred vision. Treat with acupoints HT 7, PC 6, SP 4, ST 40 and ST 44.

  3. Step 3

    Diagnose insomnia caused by a "yin deficiency that causes hyper fire." This is marked by shallow sleep, irritability in the heart region, night sweats and palpitations. Use the acupoints BL 15, HT 7, KI 3 and PC.

  4. Step 4

    Treat insomnia caused by a "Qi deficiency in the heart and spleen." These patients will suffer from very light sleep accompanied by dreams, poor appetite, poor memory, fatigue and soft stools. Use acupoints BL 15, BL 20, HT 7 and SP 6.

  5. Step 5

    Address insomnia caused by a "Qi deficiency of the heart and gallbladder." These cases are characterized by sleep with dreams, frequent waking with fear and palpitations. Treat with BL 15, BL 19, GB 40, HT 7 and PC 7.
