How to Teach Children Bus Safety

Approximately 22 million children in the United States travel to and from school on a bus. Bus rides can be enjoyable, but they also present risks. Children are especially vulnerable when entering and exiting the bus. Teach children a few simple rules and guidelines to ensure years of safe bus rides.

Instructions

    • 1

Arrive at the bus stop a few minutes early. Avoid running to catch the bus. Stand calmly, about 6 feet behind the curb and street. Strangers at the bus stop can bring danger. Stay near other children to remain safe.

    • 2

Stay out of the street, safe from traffic as the bus approaches. Form a single file line that starts with the smaller children. When the bus stops and the doors open, enter one at a time. Use the railing for balance, especially if the stairs seem steep. Take an empty seat right away.

    • 3

Remain seated while the bus is moving. Talk softly. Hold back packs and personal belongings on your lap. Keep feet planted on the floor, not extended into the aisle. Face the bus driver. If the windows are open, stay safe by keeping hands, arms and head inside.

    • 4

Allow the bus to come to a full stop before standing. Be courteous and allow other children to enter the aisle. For a safe exit, walk slowly toward the doors. Hold the railing to avoid being pushed down from behind.

    • 5

Look both directions for passing cars before stepping onto the street. If no cars are passing the bus, it is safe to proceed. Walk a safe distance away from the bus, at least 10 normal steps or 5 giant steps.

    • 6

Obey signals from the bus driver. Delay crossing the street in front of the bus until the driver indicates it is safe. This requires making eye contact from the street. Crossing behind the bus is not permitted.

Tips & Warnings

  • After exiting the bus, don't return for forgotten items. Possessions are replaceable, not children. Always put personal safety first.

  • Don't crawl underneath the bus or lean beside the bus to retrieve dropped items.
