The beauceron is an old breed of herding dog for large sheep flocks. They have a thick outer coat that lies close to their bodies as well as a short, downy and mouse-gray colored under coat. Colors appear as black and tan or gray, black and tan known as harlequin. They have a double dewclaw on each hind leg. Beauceron's require little grooming.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Natural bristle brush
  • Towel
  • Cotton pads
  • Mild dog shampoo
  1. Step 1

Brush the beauceron daily with a natural bristle brush, especially if he lives outdoors. If he has a damp coat, dry it off with a towel and brush again. Brush weekly if he's primarily an indoor pet.

  2. Step 2

Check her dewclaws every two weeks for ingrown claws. If you plan to show your beauceron, don't remove her dewclaws.

  3. Step 3

Inspect your beauceron's ears regularly for wax buildup, mites or signs of infection. If dirty, clean outside the ear canal with a damp cotton pad. Typically, beaucerons' cropped ears stand erect. If not, their half-pricked natural ears have one-third of the ear erect.

  4. Step 4

Bathe the beauceron every four to six weeks with a mild dog shampoo, so as not to dry out his skin.

  5. Step 5

Dry her coat with a towel and brush to remove excess hair. Then allow her coat to air dry.

  6. Step 6

Make sure you brush the beauceron more frequently during his shedding periods, which occur twice a year.

Tips & Warnings
  • A beauceron requires no trimming or stripping.
  • Never trim or strip a beauceron to show. You must show him with his natural coat.
