If you're in the midst of a relationship with a math major then you know that math majors can be difficult to relate to. With their extreme right brain mentality, some math majors can barely carry on a normal conversation without over-complicating the issues. Here's how to handle the math major in your life and learn to get along with all of his or her friends who are math majors.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Step1
Listen to them as they go on about seemingly insignificant details. If you try to explain to your math major that not everyone enjoys the details of sublimation or is interested in exactly how much volume a human bladder can hold to the milliliter, he won't understand. Let him say what needs to be said, and just nod approvingly.
Step2
Acknowledge their quirks silently. If you tell him it's not cool to wear his deferential equation chart in his front suit pocket at a dinner party or he ignore your mother's greeting because he was calculating the velocity of a falling leaf behind her head, don't be concerned. The way to handle such situations and get along is to look at those things as endearing personality quirks.
Step3
Let her attend math competitions and the American Mathematics Society meetings. Raising a fuss when she goes to these things only creates an air of jealousy, which is a surefire way to kill any relationship with a math major.
Step4
Enjoy a math major's individuality. Not many people are quite as unique as a math major. Enjoy the fact that they are not like anybody else on the block and can handle complicated math problems. You just never know when traits like that may come in handy.
Step5
Give them time to process information. Because a math major needs to process every possible outcome, they need a few moments to pull out the slide rule and calculate the exact moment of impact that your words have on their eardrum.
Step6
Avoid abstracts. Most math majors don't process abstracts well, such as hinting at a marriage proposal, so be direct and just ask outright. Then be sure to give them plenty of time to calculate all the possible scenarios.
