How to Buy Pigeon Feed

Many people think pigeons are a nuisance, calling them rats with wings, but pigeons can actually make very good pets. They are gentle birds and smart enough to have carried messages from place to place. Make sure your pigeons are well fed by buying the right kind of pigeon feed.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Figure out how many pigeons you'll be feeding. If you are feeding pets that you're keeping in a pigeon coop on top of your apartment building, you'll need more food than if you just have a couple pigeons or if you're just interested in feeding pigeons in the park. An adult, healthy pigeon will eat approximately 500 grams of feed each week.
Step2
Research what dietary needs pigeons have before you buy any feed. A pigeon's diet consists mainly of grains and protein and carbohydrates should make up about 15 percent of their feed.
Step3
Call pet stores in your area. Some pet stores carry premixed pigeon feed, consisting of oats, a variety of peas, corn, flaxseed, millet, rice and popcorn. Call the store before making a trip all the way down there.
Step4
Contact pet supply companies in your area that can supply you with pigeon feed. If they are not in your area, have it delivered. Pet supply companies are especially useful if you are feeding a large amount of pigeons, because you can buy the feed in bulk.
Step5
Shop for pigeon feed on the Internet. This may be your best option if you cannot find a pet store or a pet supply company that sells pigeon feed. Try a company like Purgrain or Old Elm, whose main product is pigeon feed.
