Interior design software can offer the user an inexpensive way to try out different design ideas before buying materials or hiring a contractor or designer to complete a project. Be aware that despite all the bells and whistles such software can include, it can't replace the understanding of good design principles. Some users may even find the numerous options that the software provides to be overwhelming.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Look for interior design software that allows you to view your design in 3D. Such software typically lets you take a virtual walk through the interior you've created, which is especially useful if you're having trouble visualizing what the finished project might look like.
Step2
Make sure the software comes with many texture combinations. Textures include tiles, flooring and wallpaper that can be added to the virtual rooms created with the software. Even though you may not be able to buy the exact wallpaper or flooring that you include in your design, you can use the textures to decide if you want to use things such as striped wallpaper or dark-colored flooring in a room.
Step3
Find software that includes interior lighting options. Such software can allow you to control the lighting, shadows and reflections in a room, which can be useful if you want to estimate how much lighting you may need for reading areas, a kitchen or to highlight artwork.
Step4
Know that designing an interior can be easier if the software you buy allows you to import photos of the actual rooms that are getting a makeover. Additionally, software that includes examples from designer showrooms is useful for inspiration when decorating your own interiors.
Step5
Understand that even though interior design software may be advertised as something that's easy to use, it likely will require you to spend some time learning how to use it effectively. This can include learning how to move virtual walls and furniture to match the look of an actual room.
