Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Decorations and party favors
  • Crossword puzzles
  • Scavenger hunt
  • Cake and cookies
  • Stuffed groundhog
  • DVD
  • Computer with Internet access
  1. Step 1

Host the party dressed up as a groundhog. You can use brown face paint and draw on black whiskers or look for a groundhog mask in a novelty or party shop.

  2. Step 2

Talk about the history of Groundhog Day. Explain why we celebrate this day and when it started. Explain how shadows are made.

  3. Step 3

Go online to find out the history of Groundhog Day and the beliefs about animals predicting weather in other parts of the world (see Resources below). The site also talks about Candlemas Day which is another name for Groundhog Day.

  4. Step 4

Use the Groundhog Day crossword puzzle at the Partythemeshop website (see Resources below). You can print out the crossword and let party goers fill in the answers.

  5. Step 5

Decorate the room with stuffed groundhogs. Use other party decorations too like streamers and balloons. You can also put up posters and facts about groundhogs around the room.

  6. Step 6

Have a scavenger hunt. Or, hide stuffed groundhogs and have party-goers search for them. Play games like "Pin the Tail on the Groundhog" or "Pass the Groundhog."

  7. Step 7

Bake a chocolate cake with chocolate icing shaped like a groundhog. Or, make groundhog-shaped cookies and have each person decorate the cookies to take home.

  8. Step 8

Play a DVD about groundhogs or Groundhog Day at the end of the party to wind things down. Then hand out party favors or treat bags at the end of the party.
