How to Tarp a Kayak

Since a kayak is a canoe with only an opening in the center, you might think that it's not necessary to protect it from weather. However, these lightweight canoes can be damaged inside if weather is allowed in. Especially during winter, tarp your kayak.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and the diameter of your kayak. This tells you how big of a tarp you must buy. You want the tarp to be at least 5 feet longer than the length of your kayak. The tarp should also be about 2 to 3 feet longer than the circumference of the kayak.

Consider the type of tarp you should buy for your kayak. A medium-grade plastic tarp is good enough to keep rain and leaves out of your kayak. But plastic tarps don't work very well in areas where there is often severe winter weather. Freezing temperatures can cause the plastic to crack. You need a heavy canvas tarp with plastic or rubber coating for extreme weather conditions.

    • 3

Lay the tarp out flat and center your kayak upside down on your tarp. Take the two sides of the tarp and fold them over the kayak. Now fold each end over the kayak.

    • 4

Use bungee straps or nylon rope to secure the tarp around the kayak. Be sure to secure the ends of the tarp also.

    • 5

Lift the kayak up off of the ground so that air can flow under the kayak. With the kayak turned upside down, turn it over upright. This way there are no seams on the top of the kayak which could hold water or debris.

Tips & Warnings

  • Before you tarp your kayak, make sure it is dry inside so that moisture won't cause mold. Be sure to remove all leaves and debris.
