Having your laptop be Wi-Fi is more than convenient, for you are no longer confined to your desk top but able to work anywhere in your house and still be connected to the Internet. It's also something you can do yourself.

From Quick Guide: Wi-Fi for Beginners
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Buy a wireless router for your main computer. This router can be different speeds and have a wide range spectrum so you can work anywhere in your house. Make sure that you have the capacity to create a firewall or some sort of protection so that someone else can't piggy back onto your service. Be sure also that you match the wireless router to your Internet service (broadband, dial-up, DSL). You can find these wireless routers at any local office supply or electronics store.

  2. Step 2

Turn the laptop's wireless switch to on. You may find this switch at the front of your laptop. The position of this switch depends on the make of your specific model.

  3. Step 3

Find a Wi-Fi adapter for the laptop if your laptop is not Wi-Fi ready. The adapter should match the router and your Internet service, and go into the USB or PCI port.

  4. Step 4

Upload any discs that come with the router and adapter. You should do this before installing either.

  5. Step 5

Click on the Wi-Fi icon at the bottom right of your screen, then click "Properties." Click on the "Wireless Networks" tab, then click on "Add." Look for the name of your Wi-Fi router (for example, "linksys"), click it, then click "OK." If you need to have a network key, click "Network Encryption," then enter the network key (this comes with your Wi-Fi router).

  6. Step 6

Go to the "Start" menu and click on "Connect To," then on "Wireless Network."
