Step 1
Plan your education wisely if you want to become a Southern Baptist pastor. It will help if you have a solid background as a member of a Southern Baptist church. Finish high school and maintain a good reputation that will serve you well when you need future character references.
-
Step 2
Attend a theological seminary or Bible college that is recognized and approved of by the Southern Baptist Convention. To become a Southern Baptist pastor on the staff of a well-established church (or to be considered by the Southern Baptist denomination as a church starter), it will help if you are a graduate of a well-known seminary or Bible college.
-
Step 3
Know that there are also online universities that provide ordination for ministers. Whether you take courses online or attend in a classroom setting, excel in your studies and make good grades. Of course, you will need strong communication skills, both verbal and written, to become a Southern Baptist pastor.
-
Step 4
Earn your degree in theology and look for a job on the church staff of a Southern Baptist church. Most pastors start out their careers as a staff member (often a Youth Minister), gain experience working with people and then advance to position of pastor.
-
Step 5
Be an active member of a Southern Baptist church and volunteer your services. This is part of good preparation to become a Southern Baptist pastor. You can teach Sunday school, serve as a youth counselor or go on mission trips with other church members. The more active you are as a member of the Southern Baptist denomination, the better your chances of being hired as a pastor.
