The Olympic and recreational sports of smallbore and air rifle shooting hone an athlete's concentration and ability to make fine tuning adjustments to the body. A good target rifle is key to developing your target shooting skills. If you are in the market for a target rife follow these steps to buy the right gun.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine your budget. The range of target rifles in terms of cost is very large. You can find decent smallbore target rifles for as little as a few hundred dollars and excellent near-professional rifles for many thousands of dollars. Your budget is one of the primary factors when buying a target rifle so determine your price range to get started.

  2. Step 2

Take your measurements. When buying a target rifle it's essential to take into account the length of your arms so you can buy a properly sized gun. The best way to assess the correct rifle size is to go to a target rifle range or club and test out a few differently sized guns. Make notes of what feels best and, importantly, which size allowed you to shoot best.

  3. Step 3

Decide on caliber. There are a few different ammunition calibers you can choose from when buying a target rifle. The .22 caliber target rifle is the most popular. However, some shooters start with a .45 or a .308 caliber for shorter range shooting. You can also consider a .223 caliber rifle to reduce the cost of ammunition by a small amount.

  4. Step 4

Find a good dealer or supplier. It is very rare for target rifle shooter to buy their guns or equipment from regular gun stores. In most cases, a gun store does not carry or order target rifles. This means that online outlets, target rifle ranges and specialty stores and used target rifle dealers are the best place to look when buying a target rifle. So, don't waste your time at the gun shop and instead start out with a target rifle specialty store.
