Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday that is celebrated on May 5th. On May 5, 1862 a Mexican army defeated invading French troops that outnumbered them. Cinco de Mayo is mainly celebrated in the United States where it became popular in the 1960s when Mexican Americans re-embraced their heritage.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check with your roommate to make sure it is okay with her if you decorate the dorm room for Cinco de Mayo. If she does not want the room decorated, you should limit your decorations to your half of the room.

  2. Step 2

Make a Mexican fiesta flower arraignment using cut zinnias in orange, pink, purple and white. You can also make paper flowers for your arraignment instead of using live ones if you wish.

  3. Step 3

Hang red, green and white balloons around your dorm room. These are the colors of the Mexican flag and are often used when decorating for Cinco de Mayo.

  4. Step 4

Draw or purchase cactus and desert flower scenes to hang on the walls.

  5. Step 5

Fold paper plates in half and fill them with beans. Staple or tape the edges of the plate together to make maracas. Decorate the outside of the plates and tape streamers onto them.

  6. Step 6

Blow up a large balloon and tie the end. Tear newspaper into strips, wet the strips and put them on the balloon. Let the newspaper dry and harden to make a piñata. A piñata is an important part of every Cinco de Mayo celebration. After it is hard, paint it with an assortment of bright colors, pop the balloon and cut a hole in the piñata. Fill with wrapped candy and hang it in your dorm room.
