A handheld navigational device is a portable GPS system that you can take wherever you go. It can be mounted in your car or you can carry it around with you when you travel from place to place. Never get lost again when you buy a handheld navigational device.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find out the brand names of handheld navigational devices. You want to choose a version from a name that you know you can trust. Select a version from Magellan, Garmin or Mio.

  2. Step 2

Get a waterproof handheld GPS system. Since it's portable, it will probably be exposed to the elements at one point or another. Make sure that the device can survive water exposure.

  3. Step 3

Look for a handheld navigational system that has the most up-to-date preloaded maps. You don't want a device that requires numerous downloads. The Mio Digiwalker has preloaded maps of both the United States and Canada.

  4. Step 4

Select a handheld navigational device that has SD card expandability. In this case, you'll be able to upload music and pictures onto the device. Consider the Magellan Triton 2000.

  5. Step 5

Compare prices. Before you select your handheld GPS system, you should shop around to find the best deal. The devices are expensive and can run upwards of $500.

Tips & Warnings
  • Handheld navigational devices are consistently getting updated with new features and capabilities. Newer versions can even give instant barometric pressure readings to warn of rain.
  • Your selection can be made easier if you know of someone with a handheld navigational device and they can give you a recommendation.
