Step 1
Practice the "Hit and Hold" putting technique. This technique can be tricky to learn but is essential learn putting techniques. Have a friend videotape you as you putt and pay attention to how much your body moves. The less movement you make, the better your putting results will be.

Step 2
Run lag putting drills. Lay several lengths of string at various distances and practice putting so you place the ball in between the strings. Learning to place your putt where you want it is an incredibly important skill that will drastically improve your ability to sink putts and read the greens.

Step 3
Set up straight putt drills. Start with five golf balls and make sure you're making straight putts to focus on your swing rather than the break. Set a goal of making all five in a row. If you miss, start over at one. As you improve, increase your goal until you reach 50. When you reach your 47th, you'll learn to putt better under pressure, as you will not want to start all over at one.

Step 4
Practice. Nothing will help you learn putting techniques better than consistent practice. You'll see what you're doing incorrectly on a regular basis and thereby learn what to correct.
