A handicap is also required for USGA tournament participation. It is also a way that you can track your golf game's progress over time. Here are few tips to explain how you can establish a USGA handicap.

Instructions

    • 1

Join a golf club. Golf clubs are not necessarily exclusive country clubs with expensive dues. Many clubs are simply groups of people who play at public courses and associate with each other.

    • 2

Turn in your scorecards to the handicapping committee after each round.

    • 3

See if your club authorizes access to the Golf Handicap Information Network (GHIN) and get logon name and a password so you can enter your scores from your home or any computer connected to the Internet.

    • 4

Track your first five rounds of golf scores to get your initial handicap.

    • 5

Keep turning in your golf scores after each round to keep your handicap updated. Handicaps are figured from the best 10 of your last 20 games.
