How to Give a Sermon
If you are about to give a sermon to a church's congregation, you certainly don't want to bore everyone to tears. But you absolutely must deliver the message that God has sent for you to preach. There is a fine line to walk, and a skilled preacher knows just how to walk it.

1
Plan ahead. Outline your sermon topics at least four months in advance so you can have plenty of time to prepare the right sermon for your congregation.
-
2
Choose the scripture you plan to use. Read the entire book to get the scripture segment in the correct context. Read several translations of the scripture. If possible, read the scripture in Greek or Hebrew.
-
-
3
Study several Biblical commentaries. Get other experts opinions on the scripture you are planning to use.
-
4
Look for ways the sermon topic impacts your congregation's life. Give examples as part of your message. Find ways for members of the congregation to incorporate the message into their lives.
-
5
Write the sermon you plan to give. Have a distinct beginning that engages your audience. Compose a middle that keeps the audience tuned in. And, give a conclusion to the sermon that has a specific call to action. Either give the sermon from an outline or from a complete script. Choose which method you are most comfortable using.
-
6
Practice the sermon. Time it. While some preachers have unlimited time to preach, others may need to meet certain time constraints.
-
7
Evaluate your sermon's effectiveness. Reflect on how you would change it, if you ever use it again.
