Microdermabrasion treatments can improve the appearance of skin affected by sun exposure or aging. A device similar to a fine sandblaster uses gentle abrasion and suction to remove the dead outer skin. To get the best results, learn how to choose a microdermabrasion center.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look for doctors who are board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

  2. Step 2

Check the American Board of Medical Specialties website to see that the doctors are board certified in plastic surgery.

  3. Step 3

Verify the status of the doctors' licenses. Calling the state board of health can help you determine license status.

  4. Step 4

Check for any malpractice judgments or disciplinary actions against the doctors' licenses. Your state's health department can help you find this information.

  5. Step 5

Ask your doctor about his training and credentials, then go one step farther and verify them. Some state websites will tell you, but not all do. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons website also can provide the information on most plastic surgeons.

  6. Step 6

Discuss the procedure and any complications your doctor has had occur.

  7. Step 7

Seek your family doctor's advice and recommendations to help you choose a dermabrasion center.

Tips & Warnings
  • More than one treatment may be needed to take care of fine wrinkles and pigmentation in the skin.
  • Inquire about anesthesia. Your anesthesia should be administered by a certified registered nurse anesthetist or a physician anesthesiologist.
  • Be careful of any doctor who claims that he has never had any problems or who refuses to discuss possible complications.
