How to Create a Coffee Filter Butterfly
Nothing says spring like brightly colored butterflies. Kids love craft projects, and a simple craft project can transform simple coffee filters into vibrant colored butterflies that can be used as magnets, puppets or simple home decor. This project is fun and safe for kids aged 3 and up, and can be a great way to spend a spring afternoon.
Things You'll Need
- Paper coffee filter (1 per butterfly)
- Watercolor paints
- Paint brush
- Craft supplies (string, fishing line, glitter, glue, sequins, beads)
- 1/2 black chenille stem
- Magnets (optional)
- Popsicle sticks (optional)
Instructions

1
Lay the paper coffee filter out flat on a protected surface. It is important that you cover the work area with newspaper or plastic, as the paints will quickly pass through the filter.
-
2
Paint the butterfly in any way you like. You may also want to add sequins, glitter or any other decorations you like. Allow the filter to dry thoroughly before folding it into a butterfly.
-
-
3
Fold the portion of black chenille piping in half and set aside. Fold the paper coffee filter accordion style making pleats that are about 1/2 an inch wide. Place the folded filter into the chenille stem, centering the filter at the bend.
-
4
Twist the chenille stem once or twice to hold the butterfly wings in place. Fold over or spiral the loose ends of the stem to create the butterfly's antenna. Finally, fan out the painted edges of the coffee filter to create the wings.
-
5
Finish the coffee filter butterfly by gluing a magnet to the back for a beautiful refrigerator adornment. You may also glue the chenille piping to a popsicle stick to make a puppet or attach a piece of yarn or fishing line to the chenille body and hang flying butterflies around the house.
