Moving away to college and living in a dorm can be an exciting but scary time. To help ease any apprehension, it's best to make your dorm room feel like home. Adding personal touches to a dorm room can make it seem as if you haven't moved very far from home. Here's some things you can do to make your dorm room feel like home.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Bring your favorite comforter or bedspread from home. If the bed doesn't have a mattress, get one that feels as close to your mattress at home as possible.

  2. Step 2

Display pictures of your family and friends around the dorm room to make it feel like home. A great idea for a small dorm room is a collage frame which allows you to place several pictures inside one frame.

  3. Step 3

Put up posters of your favorite rock bands or movie stars. Making the space reflect you is the best way to make your dorm room feel like home.

  4. Step 4

Hang curtains just like the ones you have hanging in your room back home, if your dorm room has a window. If you can't find ones that match, bring the curtains from home to use.

  5. Step 5

Decorate the room with personalized items that reflect you and your personality. If, for instance, you collect certain knick-knacks, bring some from home to place around your dorm room to make it feel like home.

  6. Step 6

Buy an old sofa, a small refrigerator and a TV to put in your dorm room. Having a sofa to relax on, a TV to watch and some snacks in the refrigerator will go a long way toward making your dorm room feel like home.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't let someone else—-a relative or friend, for instance—-decorate your dorm room for you. Add your own personal touch to make the room feel like home.
  • Check with your school about what items it allows in your dorm room. Most, for example, don't allow a hot plate or toaster oven in the room.
