Typing is a valuable skill that you can use the rest of your life. To teach a child to type at home you need to know and have certain things. You can teach typing anywhere as long as you know how to type and have the proper equipment. The following will help you learn how to teach a child to type at home.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Memorize the keyboard. In order to learn to type your child must know the keyboard.

  2. Step 2

Show them which fingers to use for each key. After they know, where the keys are they then need to know which fingers to use for each key. There are sites online that you can use to demonstrate this and they can also practice there or you can have them practice with homework assignments or other typing practice.

  3. Step 3

Watch them type. Give them time to get the hang of using the right fingers for each key and give them instruction as they need it. Do not be too critical at first, typing takes time, patience and practice.

  4. Step 4

Read over their work, unless it is just a typing exercise to practice which fingers to use for each key. As time progresses, they will get the hang of it and start typing real things instead of gibberish--this is a practice exercise. When they do you need to start reading their work for typos, but it will probably be sometime before they get to that stage.

  5. Step 5

Allow them time to get all the practice they need. Their own typewriter or keyboard will make it much easier for them to practice and learn.

  6. Step 6

Continue watching closely because children have a tendency to take shortcuts. If they are going to learn the right way to type, you have to stay with them to make sure they are using the proper technique. To teach a child to type takes time and patience on your part and patience and practice on their part.

  7. Step 7

Be sure to let your child play the typing games that they have online or ones that you can buy in the store. When they get bored with the typing practice, playing the typing games get them back into the spirit of things.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you don't watch what your child is doing when they are practicing, they may decide a couple of fingers are all they need to type. There are people who do this successfully but they are not typing properly.
  • The key to typing is time, patience and practice.
  • Games are a great way to keep children interested in typing.
  • Memorizing the keyboard comes with time, the more they practice the easier they will find the keys.
