Flying remote controlled airplanes has become a popular hobby for children and adults. There is a wide variety of airplane designs available, which can make buying an airplane quite challenging for a beginner. Use the information below to learn how to buy a remote controlled airplane.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Identify the kind of airplane you'd like to own. This may take some time, as the number of design and color options is endless. Consider how much assembly you're willing to perform. You can purchase remote controlled airplanes that are ready to fly, while others require some construction.

  2. Step 2

Choose a gas, nitro or electric airplane. Gas models run on a mixture of oil and automobile gas, while electric models use batteries that must be charged. Nitro airplanes run on a special fuel called Nitro-Methane.

  3. Step 3

Visit a number of retailers. Remote controlled airplanes are available many places, including hobby shops and toy stores. Do some comparison shopping to find out which store has the best deals and the most knowledgeable staff.

  4. Step 4

Talk to other remote controlled airplane enthusiasts and get their recommendations on what to buy and where to buy. The staff at most hobby shops can give suggestions. Find out if your community has a remote controlled airplane club or field--visit and ask members for their advice.

  5. Step 5

Go online. Internet auction and classified ad sites are a great place to find new and used remote controlled airplanes at discounted prices. This strategy is especially useful if you're new to the hobby and you're not sure how seriously you want to pursue it.
