How to Raise Miniature Horses

A beautiful smaller version of a full size horse, a miniature horse is usually less than 34 inches in height. Miniature horses are gentle and affectionate by nature. Their mild mannerism and small size makes them wonderful companions and popular pets. But before getting miniature horses you will need to know a few things about how to raise them.

Instructions

    • 1

Plan on at least half of an acre of grazing land per miniature horse that you want to raise. A miniature horse grazes just like a full size horse. He can be maintained on half an acre as long as his diet is supplemented with hay every day.

    • 2

Designate an area for hay storage and set up delivery of good quality feed hay. Depending on the size and age of the horses, each one will consume between 2 and 5 pounds per day in addition to their pasture grazing.

    • 3

Provide a barn or a shelter for shade and protection from the weather. Remember, although a miniature horse is small and could be brought inside the house, she is a horse and would be better off in a barn.

    • 4

Locate a large animal veterinarian to provide medical care. There are annual vaccinations your miniature horse will need to stay healthy. The vet will also put you on a regular worming routine. Most horses are routinely wormed every 2 months.

    • 5

Trim the hooves of your miniature horse around once every 2 months. If you do not know the proper way to trim horse hooves locate a professional to do it for you and ask him to show you how to do it yourself.
