A Communist is a person who belongs to the Communist Party, a political system built on the belief that property should belong to the community and that labor should be performed for the common benefit of all. Dealing with a communist shouldn't be cause for fear. It is simply a matter of understanding and respecting another point of view, even if you may not agree.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Take a close look at your attitudes and beliefs about differences in political opinions and about communism in particular. We all have biases, but in order to deal with people whose opinions may not agree with ours, it's important to recognize that differences exist and examine them. Polarizing political groups does no good to anybody, but only fosters more fear and distrust.
Step2
Take time to learn more about communism. When you deal with communists, don't hesitate to ask questions, but always be respectful when doing so. Listening and considering differing opinions goes a long way towards smoothing the way towards acceptance. Visit the Communist Party USA's web site listed in the Resource section below to learn more about communist beliefs.
Step3
Keep in mind that nobody is 100 percent right and nobody is 100 percent wrong. All beliefs and political systems have good and bad points. If you believe that your way is the only way, you are putting up a roadblock that will prevent you from dealing with a communist in a positive way. Keep a two-way line of communication open when dealing with issues that affect both rural and urban areas.
Step4
Find things to talk about other than your beliefs. If a communist wants to talk about beliefs that differ from yours, calmly state your point of view and try not to let the discussion lead to a debate or argument. If you do argue, argue with reason. Try to see such a discussion as a sharing of opinions. If she makes a good point, acknowledge it. Attempt to find some common ground. Remember that you are both human beings with many interests apart from political beliefs.
Step5
Refrain from insisting that a communist change his point of view and don't try to "enlighten" another person. This isn't your right, and remember that you wouldn't appreciate it, either. If you feel that a communist is forcing his point of view on you, you have every right to calmly and clearly stand up for what you believe in.
Step6
Keep an open mind and don't be judgmental. Don't judge a person's character by his chosen political system. If you want to deal with a communist, a closed mind will only close doors to any understanding.
