Reasons to Collect Unemployment

There are many reasons to be able to collect unemployment. All depend on certain circumstances and on being approved by your state’s Unemployment Insurance Program. When in doubt, file for unemployment benefits. Here are several of the main reasons you may be eligible to collect unemployment.

Laid Off

You may be eligible to collect unemployment if you have been laid off from a job as part of a corporate restructuring or Reduction in Force (RIF).

Temporary Furlough

If your company has decided to require employees to take several weeks off without pay (a temporary furlough), you may be eligible to collect unemployment during the time you are not being paid by your employer.

Move

In certain cases, you may be eligible to collect unemployment if you had to give up your job in order to move because of your spouse’s job.

Company Shutdown/Bankruptcy

You may be eligible to collect unemployment if your company has closed its doors completely, or has declared bankruptcy and dismissed its employees.

Firing Without Cause

There are cases where you may be eligible to collect unemployment if you were fired without cause and through no fault of your own.
