Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pen and paper
  • Notebooks
  • Camera
  • Recorder
  • Laptop
  1. Step 1

Decide on the purpose of your writing. Know if you will write fiction, non-fiction, articles, travel articles, blogs or journals. Knowing your purpose helps you decide what materials you need and what method of writing you will use.

  2. Step 2

Take paper in a bound book so you don't have to worry about losing individual sheets. Buy fancy bound books to inspire you if you are writing for fun. Use spiral bound books for writing work material so you can easily tear out pages as you edit. Bring pencils, eraser and pens. Make sure you bring several in case you lose one.

  3. Step 3

Take a laptop computer with you if you don't like writing on paper. You can keep all your files on a thumb drive or send the files back home via email. Or use a digital recorder to take notes. You can interview people you meet or speak into the recorder yourself.

  4. Step 4

Bring a camera and become an instant photo journalist by taking photos and writing about the shots you have taken. Or use the photos to jog your memory later when you are ready to write. Date all your notes and photos so that you can organize your work when you get home.

  5. Step 5

Take point form notes if you don't have time to write in full sentence and paragraph form. Keep a tiny notebook in your pocket or bag so you can have it handy for tidbits of writing.

  6. Step 6

Recap your day each evening before you go to sleep. You may think of things you didn't write down earlier.

  7. Step 7

Include all your senses in your writing. Talk about the sounds, smells and sights of each place you visit. Make the reader feel what you felt when you were visiting.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take advantage of any breaks you have. Write while you are sitting at the airport, on a plane, on a train or in a car.
  • Don't lose your notebook.
  • Back up your computer data in case of theft.
