Step 1
Demonstrate a strong academic background with a high GPA in undergraduate work and a high GRE test score.
-
Step 2
Understand that many music schools offer a limited number of music performance fellowships in strings, brass and percussion.
-
Step 3
Contact specific schools about their requirements, and follow them exactly. Most schools have informational websites, plus you can email or call the school. In most cases, it is best to talk directly with someone in the graduate music school program.
-
Step 4
Know that most music school fellowships require an application and resume in addition to performing. Look to their website for a downloadable or online application. An application fee and financial aid application may also be required.
-
Step 5
Audition for the school with classical music choices that may include Mozart, Mendelssohn or Ravel. Often a school requires specific selections of music or may require one song and allow you to choose other contrasting pieces of music. You may also be asked to submit audition tapes.
-
Step 6
Arrange for letters of recommendation relative to your musical abilities. If possible, ask for recommendations from respected musicians and professors.
-
Step 7
Make note of the fellowship deadline. There is much to do and prepare for when applying for a music school fellowship. Make a checklist with the information you collect. Give yourself plenty of time.
