Step 1
Under the "layers" menu, find the layer where you want to create a vector mask.

Use a 'Hide/Reveal All' option to either select the entire layer or discard it. This kind of vector mask works uniformly on a layer.

For a shaped vector mask, decide what portion of the image you want to capture.

Select a shape or pen tool.

Draw a work path to select your image. Starting at a certain point on the contour, draw a precise path along the edge of the object you want to capture. Go all the way around the object, closing your work path, to select the precise shape you want.

Make your path into a vector mask using the following command prompt: choose layer > add vector mask > current path.
