How to Scan Microfiche

These days, "scanning" microfiche might be interpreted as getting these obsolete technologies converted to something post-millennial involving digital images. The old microfiche machines in libraries across the country are (or were) unwieldy, unappealing and sometimes confusing. The traditional way to scan microfiche involves using the machine's mechanical controls to pin down a bit of text located somewhere on the sprawling map of the microfilm.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Locate themicrofiche cards." These rectangular negatives contain your periodicals or other printed information. At one time, these film prints were marvels of modernity. Locate the film according to index to see if it fits your desired topic.

  2. Step 2

Do research by indexes of dates or topics that are relevant to what you're looking for. You can narrow your search down this way before searching the film itself.

  3. Step 3

Use the machine's glass "case" and level controls to insert the film into the holder.

  4. Step 4

Turn the projector screen on. A power button should be located at the side of the machine. Interior light will project the print on the screen.

  5. Step 5

Use the mechanical tray controls to move the holder around while scanning the screen for what you want. Most microfiche cards have some index information printed on the lower right. You may have to locate your desired page by a little trial and error.

Tips & Warnings
  • Ask for updated technology. It's likely that your library either has other research forms available or has plans to update.
