How to Reward a Teenager

The teenage years can be a tricky time for parents and teens alike. With the onset of puberty, this time of rapid growth and change can be something that takes time for both parent and child to adjust to—especially when fluctuating hormones are added to the mix. Although this may be a tumultuous time for parents, you definitely want to seek out and reward good behaviors in your teen.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Recognize and reinforce good behavior with a verbal reward. For example, a thumbs-up, a smile, eye contact, pat on the back, hug or kiss might be all that is necessary to let your teen know that he is doing a good job.
Step2
Keep a "good behavior marble jar." For every good behavior, put a marble in a jar. When your teen has earned a certain number of marbles, you can reward her with that promised video game, pair of shoes or the latest CD.
Step3
Throw a slumber or pizza party. Rewarding your teen can be as simple as letting him have a few friends over for a get-together celebration.
Step4
Give your teen a tasty treat. Reward your teen by taking her out to their restaurant of choice, or simply go out for ice cream following dinner.
Step5
Reward your teen with a day off from doing chores. Most teens have a few chores and responsibilities. However, you can reward good behavior by giving him a "Free From Chores Day Pass" to skip these duties.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is easy to spoil teens, however. Keep the rewards simple, meaningful and economical. Teens must learn that although everyone enjoys to be rewarded for good behavior, you are not always rewarded for everything you do in the real world. Use your discretion to give rewards when warranted, but don't go overboard with them.
