Attend law school. No matter what area of law you plan to practice, you will need to attend law school and get good grades. You can, however, choose to take additional courses in the area of law you are interested in, such as patent law. This will give you the educational knowledge you need about patent law to get into that specialty.

Read up on patent law. It is important to familiarize yourself with the past cases and precedence set by patent law, in order to be a more effect patent lawyer. You can do this by staying up on the current patent cases that are being tried and reading as much on patent law as you can find. The law library at your law school is a great place to start.

Get an internship with a patent lawyer. It is important to learn as much as possible about being a patent lawyer from one, before you make the commitment. This will enable you to make the right decision on the area of patent law (litigation or prosecution) you would like to practice and whether or not you would like to work for a company or independently.
