How to Collect Americana

When people collect Americana, they are collecting items that show the true character and growth of the American culture. The antiques and collectibles that make up Americana help us to understand how our country grew and developed in the early years. Quilts, furniture, woodcarving, photographs and even early Disney items are all examples that show our early heritage.

  1. Step 1

    Learn about the different types of Americana to see what type you would be interested in collecting. There are many excellent books and websites full of information on the subject such as Chubb Collectors.

  2. Step 2

    : Decide what type of Americana, you would like to collect. Many collectors limit their collection by item type, artist, design or area of the country.

  3. Step 3

    Visit local antique shops and look for a piece of Americana that would make a good addition to your collection. Tell the shop owner what type of Americana that you collect, and they will be happy to look for you when they go on buying trips, to auctions and visit other shops.

  4. Step 4

    Browse online auction sites and antique shops. You might find a piece of Americana that you would like to purchase.

  5. Step 5

    Attend local auctions. There's usually an assortment of Americana that might be a good addition to your collection, if you're the winning bidder.

  6. Step 6

    Scour the local thrift shops, flea markets and garage sales. Occasionally you'll find a piece of Americana that has been packed away for years.
