A sump pump is not necessary to keep your fish tank running but it helps. If your fish tank is covered, adding chemicals and other supplements can be a hassle. But adding a sump pump can make everything much more convenient—you'll never be without one again.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine how big your sump should be. Consider the size of your fish tank as well as the area you have surrounding it. Generally, your sump will sit below the aquarium in the stand so measure the space and don't buy anything too big.

  2. Step 2

Decide if you want a plastic sump or an acrylic sump for your fish tank. Plastic will work but acrylic is usually preferable since it won't get brittle over time.

  3. Step 3

Consider what you want to do with the sump. It will work as a filter by changing and cleaning the water for you but there's much more it can do. Use it to test, adjust and monitor the water as well as add any necessary chemicals or supplements.

  4. Step 4

Shop around before you commit to anything. Look at your local pet stores and browse online to find one you're positive will work for your conditions. Since the sump isn't essential to run the tank, take your time and find one you'll keep and use for years.

Tips & Warnings
  • Bigger is better when it comes to fish tank sumps. Buy the biggest you can afford or that you have room for. If you don't find one you like consider making your own. All you'll need is plastic food containers and PVC pipe and you have the beginnings of a sump for your fish tank.
