Some of the simplest things in life can sometimes be the most challenging. Finding a light switch in an unfamiliar place can be a bit of a task. Most of the time switches are placed in standard places, but sometimes through thoughtlessness, they are not placed at points of entrance or exit from an area or they are simply not available at all.

Things You'll Need:

  • Flashlight
  1. Step 1

Search the inside door frame of a room that you are entering. Search the section within a foot of the frame up and down from shoulder height to about waist height. When feeling around these areas be careful not to knock over anything that might be hung on the wall or placed on a bookcase or table just inside the door.

  2. Step 2

Step back one step just outside the doorway to the room and search the same region as before but on this side of the doorway. Sometimes the light switch for the room you are about to enter is placed near the outside door jam.

  3. Step 3

Take a flashlight and step into the room. Shine the light around the walls of the room about shoulder height and search for another entrance or a light switch placed away from the doorway. Not every entrance to a room always has a light switch for the room.

  4. Step 4

Look for the bulb in the ceiling. If you can spot the bulb, check to see if there is a pull string that turns the light on and off. Walk to the string and pull the light on.
