Is your home in need of built in bookshelves? Would you rather build them yourself rather than hire a carpenter. By following the steps below, your home will have the desired book shelves in a very short amount of time. By completing this project you just may turn into a weekend carpenter.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Measuring tape
  • 1"x 12" maple or poplar lumber for the length of your outer box, your supports, and shelves
  • 1" x 2" supporting strips made from the same wood
  • 1/8" plywood to cover the back of the bookshelves
  • 4 supporting pins for each shelf you have
  • Standard drywall screws (100)
  • Small wire brads to help mount the back
  • Skill saw
  • Drill
  • Paint, any color
Step1
Decide on the location of your bookshelves. Once you have done this, decide how big the bookshelves are going to be. Measure the top and bottom of the area the bookshelves are going to be built. You can never assume and top and bottom are always the same size.
Step2
Measure for the vertical supports that will be built within the case. These should be done every 24 to 30 inches. Anything more than that will cause your shelves to sag and possibly break.
Step3
Design a box the size of the area you want your bookshelf. This box will serve as the case itself. Once your have decided a design and size for your case, it is time to purchase the building supplies.
Step4
Purchase all the materials you will need for the shelves. All the materials can be bought at a local building supply store.
Step5
Use your skill saw to cut the wood in direct measurement of the bookshelf design. Include correct cuts for the vertical supports and the shelves.
Step6
Fit the plywood on the back of the case and place the case in the designated spot. You will use the wire brads to stabilize your case in the position you desire. Drill holes for the supporting pins so you will be able to mount your shelves.
Step7
Mount your supports in the case. These must be done prior to putting the shelves in.
Step8
Insert the shelves. Once they are all in, paint the bookshelves any color you would like.
