Florida is known for some of the best fishing―freshwater and saltwater―in the world. Before you can cast your rod into its waters, however, you need to have a valid fishing license. Here are the basic steps to follow to get a fishing license in Florida.

Verify that you need to get a fishing license in Florida. Children under age 16 and Florida residents over the age of 65 are exempt. Locate a complete list of exemptions at Florida Fisheries website. (See link in Resources.)

Provide proof of residency to get a Florida fishing license. A Florida driver's license, military orders verifying you are stationed in Florida, voter or motor vehicle registration card, statement from a landlord or proof of a Florida homestead exemption are acceptable.

Determine which kind of license you need, such as a seven-day or 12-month freshwater, saltwater or both. Lifetime and five-year fishing licenses also are available.

Purchase your Florida fishing license from a county tax collector, online using your credit card or by dialing a toll-free number. Tax collector sub-agents, found in tackle and bait shops, sporting goods and hardware stores or fish camps, also sell Florida fishing licenses.

Attend Florida's annual free fishing weekend to be sure fishing is the sport for you before buying a fishing license. Free fishing weekend is the first weekend in April. A license is not required to participate.
