Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Modern dance knowledge
  • Place to meet
  • CDs
  • Stereo

Step1
Decide what form of modern dance you'll be focusing on in your group. Modern dance is a broad term that encompasses many forms of dance: jazz dance, contemporary dance, free dance and many others. Don't try to do too much in a short period of time. Just pick one form of dance and stick to that.
Step2
Learn the moves and be able to teach them to the other members of the group. If you're already familiar with the moves, practice teaching them before the group meets. This requires a different skill set than performing, so give yourself time to practice.
Step3
Find a place for your modern dance group to meet. All you really need is a flat surface so get creative when you're looking. Call your church or a local school. A store with a large open area can work too if the owners will let you use it after closing time.
Step4
Set meeting times for your modern dance group. Decide if you'll meet monthly or weekly and tell everyone at your first meeting. Plan the dates and times out in advance and hand everyone a schedule. Plus mention the next meeting time at each meeting so no one will forget.
Step5
Buy CDs and a way to play them for your modern dance group. Choose music you're familiar with to start things off then get more creative as time goes by.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider charging a small membership fee to offset your costs. You'll be paying for a place to meet, music and a sound system and it's not unreasonable to ask your members to contribute. But as your group gets bigger keep adding that money back into your modern dance group to make it better and more fun.
  • Don't ask beginners to attend your modern dance group if you don't want to spend the majority of your time teaching. It's okay if you want to stick to advanced participants but remember you'll have a higher turnout if beginners are welcome.
