One of the best ways to give your kitchen a face lift is by adding new windows. A new window can let in more sunlight and provide better air circulation. Though the process can be demanding, with the resources and professional advice available on the Internet and at home supply stores, you'll have all the tools necessary to install new kitchen windows.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Window kit
  • Rigid tape measure
  • Level
  • Hammer
  • Nails
  • Electric drill
  • Reciprocating saw or jigsaw
  • Moisture seal
  • Shims
  • Trim

Prepare a Hole in the Kitchen Wall

  1. Step 1

Measure the dimensions of your window.

  2. Step 2

Mark the outline of where your window will hang on the wall. Use a rigid tape measure and a level.

  3. Step 3

Drive a long nail into each of the corners you've marked as indicators for where the window will be installed. Make sure that the nails protrude through the other side of the wall so that the nail tips are visible from the home's exterior. Use an electric drill if necessary.

  4. Step 4

Frame the window's border on the exterior of your house by drawing lines connecting the visible nail ends.

  5. Step 5

Use a reciprocating saw or a jigsaw to cut through siding or sheathing along the guide marks you've made.

  6. Step 6

Widen the holes in the siding to allow for any frame or border you plan to install around the window. Do not cut away any more of the sheathing beneath the siding.

  7. Step 7

Cut away the dry wall in your kitchen according to the window's frame.

  8. Install the Kitchen Window Into the Hole You've Made

  9. Step 1

Treat the edges of your window frame with a moisture seal. Do everything in your power to protect against water damage by sealing the window frame with metal flashing, caulk or a self-adhering membrane. Use foam insulation to plug any holes between the window and the frame.

  10. Step 2

Install shims to the wall opening. Trim the shims until they're level with the opening and nail them into the kitchen window's frame. Make sure that the shims are narrow enough that you'll still be able to mount the window flush against the wall.

  11. Step 3

Mount your new window frame into the space you've created for it. Use an adhesive flange to secure it in place. Consider tacking the window against your home with a few small nails.

  12. Step 4

Fill any gaps between the window's frame and the home by inserting pieces of wallboard. Make sure the window fits snugly against the jambs on each side.

  13. Step 5

Install an awning, casement or hopper to the window's frame to finish its appearance.

Tips & Warnings
  • Specific installation requirements may differ for pre-hung window kits. Make sure to check with the installation guide or ask a hardware salesperson for any advice or troubleshooting tips.
  • If you chose to install kitchen windows on your own, pay careful attention to the risk of water damage. This can be an expensive and ongoing problem to address, especially if the home's wooden structure begins to rot.
