Things You'll Need:
- Fabric swatches
- Scrapbook
-
Step 1
Take swatches of the fabrics which will be used in your bed linens to the paint store to select a variety of paint chips. Since your bed will be the centerpiece of your room, your should choose a handful of colors drawn directly from the fabric that will dress it.
-
Step 2
Find other inspiration for secondary wall and trim colors in your bedroom. Magazine clippings of inspiration rooms, a prized art work, or even an emotion you wish to evoke may all be used to inspire your color palette.
-
Step 3
Create a scrapbook of ideas for your color scheme before settling on a paint color for your bedroom. You can use fabric swatches, paint chips or photographs to create this important visual reference.
-
Step 4
Factor in the effect of light when selecting your paint colors. Remember that west facing rooms will gain an orange tint from the sun while those facing east will be bathed in white light in the morning, which could make your paint color appear pale or washed out.
-
Step 5
Narrow down your paint and decorating colors to four. These may be different hues or different values of the same hue to be used on different walls or as accents on the ceiling, doors and trim.
-
Step 6
Play with different values of your base color to change the way your room will look once it is painted. You can make the most spacious of master suites appear small and cozy by choosing a darker value of paint for your ceiling, while a lighter value will make the room appear larger.
-
Step 7
Create separation between the spaces in your bedroom when you choose different shades of paint for the walls of closets, halls and entryways to the master bath. By painting the wall on which the bathroom door is hung a darker shade, you can divide this space from your sleeping area.
