Solar panels are an excellent way of saving money on energy costs while helping to reduce harmful emissions to the environment. A number of companies can sell and install solar electric panels for use in your home. However, if you wish to install them yourself, there are a few details to keep in mind.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Solar panel mounts
  • Solar photovoltaic panels
  • Solar panel conduit
  • Tape measure
  • Twine/laser sight
  • Drill
  • Pilot drill bit
  • Stud finder
  • Stainless steel lag bolts
  • Metal rails
  • 3/8-inch steel bolts
Step1
Conduct an energy audit to determine how much electric power you will be able to generate with the space provided on your roof. That should give you an idea of how many panels you will need, and how much you will save by using the panels.
Step2
Determine what kinds of mounts you will need. Solar panels use different mounts depending on how and where you want to install them.
Step3
Locate the position of your house's rafters on the roof. You can do this with a stud finder. The rafters will support the solar panels once they are installed.
Step4
Mark out the place where you will install the mounts, measuring the space required for your particular panels. Use twine or a laser sight to make sure the mounts are properly aligned.
Step5
Use a pilot bit to pre-drill holes for the mounts. This will prevent you from damaging your rafters while you drill.
Step6
Drill and secure the mounts to the roof, using the lag bolts to hold them in place.
Step7
Attach the rails to the mounts using the 3/8-inch bolts.
Step8
Install the solar panels along the rails, making sure each is secured in place.
Step9
Run a conduit from the solar panels to the converter in your house. Make sure it is properly secured and will not break free in the event of inclement weather.

Tips & Warnings

  • You should always consult with an expert before installing solar electric panels. He can advise you on what types of paneling are right for your home and how best to go about mounting them.
  • Make sure your solar panels are placed where they can receive the maximum amount of sunlight. You may need to cut away branches and other obstacles which block the panels from the sun. Some solar panels can be adjusted over the course of the year to absorb as much sun as possible.
  • Contact your local electricity provider before installing your solar panels. They may have certain requirements before allowing you to proceed, and might require a technician or their own to be present. Some power companies also provide rebates for installing solar panels, and will even let you sell power back to them.
  • The U.S. Department of Energy provides information on conducting an energy audit (see Resources below).
  • Rooftop work can be treacherous. Always exercise prudent safety measures, and keep a friend or family member in the immediate area in case of an accident.
  • You may require a specific building permit before installing solar panels on your roof. Check the statutes in your area and make sure you have taken the appropriate steps before you begin work.
