Windows Internet Explorer (IE) is the most popular web browser on the market today. Millions of PC users have searched the Internet and completed their work with the help of this simple web interface. Your Internet searches may help you find unique wallpaper, but you need to know how to restore default IE wallpaper to begin from scratch.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • System restore CD (optional)

Step1
Move your cursor over the "Start" button in the lower left hand part of your desktop. Click "Start" and locate the "Settings" icon within this menu to access customization features.
Step2
Look through the "Settings" menu to find the "Control Panel" icon, which will be located near the top of your screen if icons are arranged alphabetically. Click the left mouse button twice to activate the "Display" menu.
Step3
Press the "Background" tab in the "Display" menu to locate IE wallpaper settings. You can access default settings, as well as a series of wallpapers installed before purchase by using the "Browse" feature.
Step4
Search through the "Files Type" box in the "Browse" menu to look for the original IE wallpaper type. You should double click on the "Background" folder in this menu to find the image files needed to restore your original wallpaper.
Step5
Select the "Windows" file in the "Files Type" box of your computer to find the exact file needed to restore original wallpaper. You can scroll down the "Windows" folder to find the "Web" folder that will lead you to the "Wallpaper" folder. This file contains all of the supporting documents and images installed by the manufacturer.
Step6
Look for the exact file name within the "Wallpaper" folder to complete your restoration efforts. The file name differs with each operating system, but anyone with a Microsoft operating system after 1995 will find the system name before an ".htm" suffix. You can double click on this file name and press "OK" in the following menus to restore IE wallpaper.
Step7
Log off your computer to confirm that you have completely restored the original wallpaper. You may need to run your system restore CD or consult your manufacturer if the original file is corrupted beyond use.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remove old wallpapers on a regular basis and restore the default IE wallpaper to check for viruses. You should set the desktop to no wallpaper or the original image and proceed with a virus scan to determine the cleanliness of your current image. You can restore the old image by clicking on its source file after the scan.
