Make a Cheap Toy for Your Dog Using a Discarded Plastic Coffee Container

Anybody who loves pets--specifically dogs--will surely agree that we all tend to overspend on chew toys. Herein lays the problem. Chew toys are named as such because our dogs chew them to tiny little bits and then they are gone. Unfortunately so is the money we spent on the dog toy, and not to mention that they tend to run around $15 to $20 per toy, which can get to be expensive. Here is a way to make an inexpensive chew toy for your dog and save yourself a ton of money in the process.

How to Make a Cheap toy for Your Dog Using a Discarded Plastic Coffee Container

  1. Step 1

Get the supplies. You can easily acquire all the supplies on the above list at any hardware and grocery store near you.

  2. Step 2

Prepare the container. Empty the contents of the coffee container into a storage bin and set aside. Using warm water, wash the interior of the container out so there are no coffee grinds left behind.

  3. Step 3

Cut the rope. Unravel about 16 inches of the rope and cut using the industrial scissors. Set the rest of the rope aside to for making more dog toys later on.

  4. Step 4

Puncture a small hole in the container. Using the sharpest blade on your pocket knife, puncture a hole in the side of the container near the middle. Make sure to cut the width of the hole so it is wide enough for the rope to be slid through.

  5. Step 5

Guide the rope through the hole. With your cut of rope in hand, guide it through the hole in the container until half the rope has passed through.

  6. Step 6

Tie the rope. Pull both ends of the rope taut so they are above the opening of the container. Tie a slip knot in the rope and pull very tightly.

  7. Step 7

Give the dog their new toy. Not only is this a great chewy toy, it also works great for enduring sessions of tug-a-war. This new toy should last most large breed dogs anywhere from 1 to 8 weeks.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure to cut enough rope so you can tie the ends when finished.
  • The type of dog toy described in this article is meant for large breed canines only. Plastic coffee containers are made of non-toxic plastic and will not harm your pet.
