It's the season for giving and sharing. Unfortunately, it is also a time when criminals are watching and waiting. Shopping during the rush of the holidays can make us more vulnerable to these predators. By consistently following some common sense rules, you can better protect yourself and your belongings this shopping season. Read on to learn how.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Keen sense of observation
  • Purse, pockets, and packages rules
  • A pocket whistle
Step1
Safety In Numbers--If at all possible, try not to shop alone, especially at night. Park in a safe, well-lit area. Take a few moments to observe the area before exiting your vehicle. If you see anyone (alone or in a group) loitering, just sit tight and watch for a few minutes. If they do not leave, leave and park in another area.
Step2
Don't Advertise--Remove any GPS or other portable electronic devices before exiting your vehicle. Put them in your trunk, along with any packages or other valuables. In the rush of holiday shopping, many people overlook the obvious. Be sure your vehicle's lights are off, the sunroof is closed, and the doors are locked.
Step3
Whistle While You Work--Keep a small whistle in your pocket at all times while shopping. If anyone approaches you suddenly, use it! Would-be thieves aren't anxious to be caught and a loud noise sends many of them on their way.
Step4
Purses Are Bullseyes--If at all possible, leave your purse in your trunk or at home. Use only a small wallet that can be kept in your pocket or on a belt pack. If you do carry your purse, make sure it is closed at all times. If someone attempts to take your purse, let it go. You can recover from stolen items, it is not worth putting yourself in extreme danger.
Step5
Caution At ATM's--If possible, use a drive-through ATM at your bank before shopping. Be very careful when withdrawing cash from walk-up ATM machines. Use your hand or jacket to keep the keypad out of view from others. Take out only as much cash as you really need.
Step6
Don't Over Do It--Trying to get finished with your shopping through a maze of displays and other frantic shoppers will quickly lead you to distraction. Have a pre-determined plan of which gifts you will shop for and let the window shopping go until another time. Keep on your toes, look for red flags, and don't draw attention to yourself and hopefully you will have a safe and happy shopping experience!

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep your cell phone fully charged and on your person at all times while shopping
  • Look around for parking lot and mall security when arriving. If you see none, look at other entrances. If there are none present at all, consider shopping somewhere else
  • Do not struggle with robbers. Nothing you own is worth your safety.
