Getting a pay raise or promotion is not as hard as some would have you believe. You simply need to commit to the idea, and follow it through. For the purposes of this article, we will look at how to get a raise. You could substitute the same steps to get a promotion, as well. Read on to learn more.

From Quick Guide: Ask for a Raise
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The first step is to decide what is a reasonable next step. Ask yourself how much you would like to be making in sixty days. Do not be unreasonable with this and shoot for the moon. Simply think up a reasonable pay raise that you feel you deserve and can earn over the next 60 days.

  2. Step 2

Once you have a figure in mind, schedule an appointment with your supervisor. Let him know that you will need a half hour or less of his time to talk over your future with the company. Ask that it be at a time when he or she can focus on what you all are talking about. Do not try to discuss this "on the fly" as you will find yourself going in circles.

  3. Step 3

Once you have the appointment set, you will want to prepare a bit. Go ahead and list some of your accomplishments and your strengths. Be sure to also list some weaknesses that you need to work on as this shows you genuinely are interested in doing your job better. Also write down how long you have been with the company, and why you like your job.

  4. Step 4

At the meeting, begin by thanking them for the opportunity to work for the company. Let them know that the reason you have asked for the meeting is to discuss how you can increase your pay within sixty days.
