Natural Soy Candles

Natural soy jar candles are fun and simple to make. They are wonderful gifts and bring a decorative touch and pleasure to any home or setting while burning. Soy wax is considered superior to paraffin and petroleum-based candle products because it burns cleaner and is safer to breathe. Once you have the supplies, you'll find candle making is an enjoyable hobby or even side business.

  1. Step 1

Clean and dry your glass jars. Pint canning jars, baby food jars and similarly sized decorative jars all work well.

  2. Step 2

Prepare jars with wicks, which can be set by hand or with a wick setter. Cut the wick material to about an inch above the candle top; you'll trim it after the wax is cool.

  3. Step 3

Melt the soy wax beads or chips in the double boiler. Wax burns easily, so the double boiler or a pot over a pot of boiling water is key.

  4. Step 4

Remove wax from heat once all chips or pieces are melted. The temperature should be about 150-180 degrees Fahrenheit when melted.

  5. Step 5

Stir dye and fragrance into the wax as desired when the wax is 140° - 150° F. The rule of thumb is to use about an ounce of fragrance per pound of wax.

  6. Step 6

Use a glass measuring cup or pitcher to pour the wax into your jars, keeping the wick in place as you pour. For the pouring stage, the wax should be 95° - 110° F.

  7. Step 7

Allow the natural soy jar candles to cool completely before use.

Tips & Warnings
  • Pay attention to the wax temperature and avoid pouring the wax into the candle jars before it has cooled sufficiently.
  • Avoid putting in too much fragrance, which can hurt the soy candle's texture.
